The increasing demand for knowledge about the welfare effects on economic and social policy measures has created a need for closer cooperation between different fields of science and different research groups engaged in welfare-relevant research. -The purpose of this project is to bring together expertise from the fields of economics, social policy and statistics and from two universities in order to create a comprehensive and integrated effort to study the performance of the Finnish welfare state in a longitudinell as well as an internationell perspective.The project aims at studying both questions concerning the economic premises for and effect of social security and problems related to the effectiveness of social policy.To increase the comparability and quality of the research results close contacts with corresponding research groups in other countries will be given high priority. -The training of new researchers in this area will also be an important task for the project.A special emphasis will be on skill to utilize huge data banks such as household budget surveys, income distribution surveys, longitudinal censuses, and variatious international data archives (Luxembourg Income Study, Luxembourg Employment Study).
